Walking and Hillwalking
There are so many beautiful walks in the area to suit all ages and abilities.Whether you're looking for a stroll on the beach, a walk around the paths at the headlands or up into the hills behind the house there is something for everyone. For the more ambitious there are many mountains lochs and glens to explore (there are guide books and maps in the house). If you are an experienced hillwalker or mountaineer there are many munroes ( mountains over 3000 feet) that can be reached and climbed in a day. We have been coming for over twenty years and still find new places to explore.

Gairloch Golf Club is just over half an hour from Opinan. It is possible to hire clubs however booking in advance is recommended during the summer months.
One of the best parts about being in this part of Scotland is the vast amount of wildlife you come into contact with every day. From just around Opinan and Mellon Udrigle it is possible to encounter deer, seals, pine marten, sea eagles, otters, porpoise, dolphins and the occasional golden eagle, basking shark or whale! Not to mention countless bird species. Whale watching cruises are also available from Hebridean Whale Cruises which is based in nearby Gairloch.

Dragonflies and Damselflies
Another famous tourist attraction in Wester Ross are the world famous National Trust Inverewe Gardens in Poolewe, a 20 minute car journey from Opinan.
Other interesting gardens to visit are the Attadale Estate and the Hydroponicum. There is also an arboretum and forest walks at Lael forest and locally Laide Wood.
Although perhaps not the most obvious of activities, the skies of Wester Ross are completely light pollution free. On a clear night the stars are incredible - and we've even got a telescope so you can do some star gazing right from the house!
Not only are we able to see many more stars and planets compared to most other places, and amazing displays of Aurora Borealis - the "Northern Lights" can be seen locally.
This is most often seen in autumn but you can check the likelihood of catching this beautiful event any time at Aurora Watch UK.
Brown Trout can be found in a lot of the lochans around Wester Ross, and luckily you don't have to walk far from the house to access many of them. There is freshwater fishing in many of the local rivers notably the nearby River Ewe.
You can try your hand angling off the dramatic rocks at Mellon Udrigle. You can even hire small boats at Gairloch.
Or you can book yourself on a fishing trip from Gairloch:
Kerry Sea Angling
North West Cruises
Or you can accompany a local fisherman and catch some local shellfish with Shellfish Safaris in Badachro, just beyond Gairloch. If you have no luck with any of the above you can often buy fresh seafood at the pier at Gairloch.
We have 2 open top kayaks at Mohr Farr which adults with kayaking experience are welcome to use at their own risk ( do remember that the weather and sea conditions can rapidly change off the west coast of Scotland).
If you don't feel confident enough to take them out by yourself or want a more extensive guided experience Walking and Wildlife Adventures are based in Gairloch and can take you out to explore beautiful coastlines, remote islands, inland lochs and deserted beaches .
Pony treks can be arranged at Gairloch Trekking Center in Flowerdale, Gairloch.
Rainy Day Activities
Although much of the great stuff to do around Wester Ross is outside there is still a lot of fun to be had on a rainy day.
If you want to learn a little more of the history of the region, and a good day out with the kids is to drive to Gairloch to visit the Gairloch Heritage Museum or Ullapool Museum. Ullapool is a lively fishing port with an award winning chippie and a variety of independent craft shops restaurants bars and bookshops.
There is also a public swimming pool in Poolewe, and a weekly market in the town hall where a range of locally produced crafts and food can be found.
Or you could make a visit to the Highland Stoneware workshops in Lochinver or Ullapool to watch how the ceramics are made and pick up a bargain!
Loopallu Music Festival in Ullapool at the end of September attracts big names including Paolo Nutini, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mumford and Sons to name but a few. The festivities take place during the day so you can buy a day ticket and enjoy some world class music!
